Funk Ferret has been on my list of artists to write about for a while and with the release of his last mix I couldn’t put it off any longer. First heard his work through his edit of “If You Want Me to Stay” by Sly and the Family Stone. It’s a minimal update that doesn’t try to fuck with the awesomeness of the original song, something I typically look down upon but he pulled off masterfully. He also happens to be the first artist that I’ve ever paid attention to from New Zealand. Add it to your list of accolades, Funk Ferret 🙂
Kreap is a juggernaut of disco love and another strong argument in my case for the domination of Australian disco funk. Not only does he release most of his material for free on soundcloud, in glorious wav format, but he also has fresh material on what seems like a weekly basis. If your into disco or funk do yourself a favor and give him a follow.
Opiuo is probably my favorite discovery of 2011 and solely ignited my infatuation with the Australian funk scene. Just listen to his shit. You’ll see why. Anyways, I joined his mailing list (which can be done here) and he dropped this funky gem for free a few days ago. He’s also planning on releasing a full length album on March 13 of 2012 so watch out. If I’ve ever made a definitive statement since this blog started, seriously, watch the fuck out for that beast. Chairmann out.
Bobby C Sound TV is a media jack of all trades. A prolific remixer, producer, and film editor, the man flawlessly combines his talents, often with a a sense of humor to boot. Typically disco funk with some big beat electro sprinkled in, his productions are always high quality yet light hearted. Almost like a showcase of his impeccable taste, he heavily samples from movies and classic music genres. Dudes got it. As always, show his fan pages some love for more free music and updates on his endeavors : soundcloud & facebook
Hey funkytown just want to introduce you to my new main dude, B.Visible. Hailing from beautiful Vienna, this guy knows how to string a beat. Glitchy, funky, and raw to the bone, B.Visible snagged my respect when I first heard “Click Save”. He uses a bass reverb that reminds me of the loose speaker cones in my parents ’91 Civic rattling against their housings. Respect for flipping that on it’s head and turning it into a unique sound. Peep my favorite works below and be sure to show his soundcloud some love.
Keep an eye out for these talented cats (or follow us as we try to do it for you). Big remixes of classic tracks on a Canadian bred funk platter. Now lets take a moment and give thanks for music, funk, and downloadable links.
For any of you who aren’t addicted to soundcloud like I am. KOAN Sound dropped a preview for his new Funk Blaster EP two days ago. The track has already garnered 20,000 plays and is one of the hardest, funkiest things I’ve ever heard. That statistic is probably a little misleading because I personally have played it probably 40 times. You gotta give us more than 1:37 of a track man! Cannot wait for this to drop officially on November 1st. (Also how dope is that album cover?)
[Update] They just released two more previews (3 out of the 4 tracks) Looks like this is going to be an amazing release.
