You know this style. Peaceful, soul-lifting, experimental…from the atmospheric hissing, to clicky hats, to crunchy snares, the texture of every element seems carefully chosen to fit this vibe. I was watching a Shlohmo interview the other day where he says: “There is still no genre name for it”
Now, Shlohmo was referring to the Friends of Friends event in LA with himself, Jonwayne (see previous Jonwayne post), Baths, and others. But I think there’s a whole slew of other artists who are catching onto this sound, and I’ve been meaning to post about them. So let’s kick off big. First some of the bigger names with albums that consistently flaunt the sound throughout:
Shlohmo: Released ‘Bad Vibes‘ pretty recently, and got tons of blog attention. Preview/buy the album here.[audio https://funkytownismyhood.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/06-just-us.mp3]
Sample song: 06 – Just Us
Baths remixes one of Shlohmo’s tunes in an appropriately titled “Post-Atmosphere”[audio https://funkytownismyhood.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/post-atmosphere-baths-remix.mp3]
Baths: Pretty big already, but this album must be mentioned, because it’s freaking beautiful: Cerulean. The dude does his own vocals a lot, and seems to have a truly fun and energetic stage presence. Check out his dubspot interview as well.[audio https://funkytownismyhood.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/03-maximalist.mp3]
Sample song: 03 Maximalist.
Jonwayne: Posted about him here. Once again, make sure to grab Bowser.
Gold Panda: While not on the Friends of Friends label, I definitely felt a kinship between Gold Panda and the others mentioned. He’s super chill and adds some exotic elements to the post-ambient sound. Be SURE to grab Lucky Shiner. Baths does a great remix of Gold Panda’s “Marriage.”[audio https://funkytownismyhood.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/09-after-we-talked.mp3]
Sample song: Gold Panda – 09 After We Talked[audio https://funkytownismyhood.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/02-marriage-baths-remix.mp3]
And of course there’s Flying Lotus on the ‘beats’ side of this sound,[audio https://funkytownismyhood.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/05-jurassic-notion-_-m-theory.m4a]
, and I would even say Mount Kimbie on the dubstep/garage side, with a strong hint of pretty. Mount Kimbie actually dumped a bunch of remixed tunes on their soundcloud recently. I really enjoyed the Maybes Berghain mix. Really moving
Alright for pt. 2 I’ll be posting a flurry of singles from artists that you’ve never (hopefully) heard of so stay tuned.
