Ifan Dafydd is a relatively new producer on that future bass vibe. He’s been likened to James Blake in style, maybe because of the soulful pitch-shifted re-invigoration of R&B vocals, or the minimalist pretty synths coloring the empty space of the song. He also lived with James Blake in university, with Mount Kimbie not too far away, explaining the similarity in their “post-dubstep” feel, soulful vibes and stunning musicality. Either way, this song treehouse has had me down for days, and I can’t stop listening. Peep the music video too if ur tryna get all estranged-like.
Since I feel bad for getting you all down, let’s spice it up with some trap shit. I don’t know a whole bunch about the origins, but ‘trap’ seems to be a genre branching out of electronic bass music that incorporates a long-missed neo-gangster feel. For example:
And finally, an introduction to a friend here at funkytown, Cuddlemonster. Wrought with a satanic fervor only a republican candidate could know, he emerges from the dark subsonic sludge of New York City, experimenting with massive sub-basslines complemented by an uncanny spectrum of emotion accessed from within the minimalist template. I’ve got a sampling of some of his tunes below, but be sure to check out his mix and newly released EP Dupe (which plays with a fascinating array of Diablo II samples, btw). Very much digging this fresh experimental style. Something is around the corner my friends….
Got a little dose of bass for you. Been a strong supporter of Griz for a while now and he just dropped a pretty sweet remix of Behind Blue Eyes by the Who. Let’s just say it’s better better than the Limp Bizkit cover of the same song.. oh wait that was one of the biggest steaming piles of baby diarrhea to ever be considered music. Comparison irrelevant. Long live Griz, Fuck Fred.
JESUS Lurka just dropped this on soundcloud. It is so delectably refreshing. Unlike anything I’ve heard recently. Feel free to be like “what the fuck?”
Also in case you haven’t heard, Jack Sparrow just dropped an LP with a fellow named Ruckspin under the collab name Author. It’s a beautifully chill album, with a really interesting jazzy influence, and dynamic set of experimental tracks. From the next-level warmth of “Green and Blue” to the darkness of “Mothership” these guys will bring the bass in ways you never thought were possible. Something different. Grab the album here
Speaking of left fucking field, I’m going to bring in Skrillz here because I’ve been listening to him for a while and he always comes up with weird crazy shit that I find really interesting and different but never end up blogging about. Well here we go. He dropped this today:
Finally, on the heavier side, we’ve got updates from Korkey Buchek and Wobbelix. Wobbelix goes hard. Super hard.
For any of you who aren’t addicted to soundcloud like I am. KOAN Sound dropped a preview for his new Funk Blaster EP two days ago. The track has already garnered 20,000 plays and is one of the hardest, funkiest things I’ve ever heard. That statistic is probably a little misleading because I personally have played it probably 40 times. You gotta give us more than 1:37 of a track man! Cannot wait for this to drop officially on November 1st. (Also how dope is that album cover?)
[Update] They just released two more previews (3 out of the 4 tracks) Looks like this is going to be an amazing release.
