Note: this post will make a lot more sense if you have a subwoofer or can hear low frequencies in sublime clarity.
There has been a tremendous emergence in the darker, deeper side of dubstep recently called “the dungeon sound.” Atmospheric but still crisp, bold but still chilled, and all the while dark, this sound is something I’m really excited about.
Some big names behind this are Kryptic Minds, SP:MC, LX One, J:Kenzo, DJ Madd, Lurka, Commodo, etc. One of my fav eps at the moment is Airtight/Gassin, an epic collab between Commodo and Lurka. Just the drums themselves on these tracks are…huge. Money well spent.
I’d like to also introduce some of the smaller artists I’ve been listening to who seem to be taking the dungeon vibe in their own direction. Our first guy Gengar keeps it minimal while still really digging deep into that dungeon sound. Between the unique sounds of nuclear, big drums in hydro, chilled feel in night sky, and uppity skank of slug, I don’t know what this guy isn’t capable of doing with this sound.
Haack is another character on the deep side. This track stabalize starts out dungeon but the bass quickly takes on a mind of its own, as Haack shows us what a subwoofer is really capable of. Mmmm bass
He makes several appearances in this HUGE new HEDMUK mix
Arktrix gives us a taste of dungeon with some deep, dark vocal work:
and this poison frog tune is just DEEEEP
fablePNG is DANGEROUS with the dungeon sound. Eeeevil intentions[audio https://funkytownismyhood.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/fablepng-playnogames.mp3]
fablePNG – Play No Games
Probably the darkest of the bunch: Enigma. This tune also starts off dungeon, but takes the sound in a much darker direction, chilling the spine with that tearing synth.[audio https://funkytownismyhood.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/enigma-are-you-afrait-of-the-dark.mp3]
